The Dutch have many pragmatic ways of dealing with “rubbish”. More examples here:

When you buy many products in glass or plastic bottles in the Netherland an extra charge is made for Statiegeld – a deposit on the bottle. The bottles are then collected for re-use and the money returned. These automatic machines for collection are in virtually every supermarket.
It’s a very efficient system and much more environmentally friendly than grinding up bottles and melting them to make new ones as happens with recycling.
In this video you see two beer bottles being put into the machine, each of which carry a 10 cent deposit, and a 20 cent receipt being printed out. You take the receipt to the checkout and get that much off your next purchase.
