The technology is now here to sort household waste, which accounts for 70 percent of all the waste produced. Until now much of this was transported to a landfill site because of the difficultly to sort a mixture of materials that is both organic(wet) and inorganic. The waste sorting systems you see being used today can only sort recyclable items PRESORTED by the consumer at home. However, by utilizing the WST system, there is a 85%-90% reduction in waste that would otherwise be landfilled. More than 60% of the sorted waste through the WST system can then be converted into energy. The organic material collected can be used for methane gas or fertilizer production.
